Can Flip Flops Cause Blisters on the Feet?

Research has shown that blisters on the feet may develop from wearing specific types of shoes. These may include flip flops, which can be popular to wear during the warmer months. Many people enjoy wearing this type of shoe, despite the fact that blisters may form between the toes. This can be a result of constant friction coupled with dirt and debris that may lodge on the feet. Additionally, blisters may form on top of the foot, and this may happen from the straps that hold the shoe together. It is defined as a small bubble that is filled with fluid, which develops over the affected area. This is how the body naturally protects the damaged skin. As the healing process occurs, the blister will gradually drain. Blisters may cause pain and discomfort while walking, which is why it is suggested that you alternate shoes you wear. For additional information on how blisters can affect the feet, please consult with a podiatrist.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters are often the result of friction. This happens due to the constant rubbing from shoes, which can lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

Symptoms

(Blister symptoms may vary depending on what is causing them)

  • Bubble of skin filled with fluid
  • Redness
  • Moderate to severe pain
  • Itching

Prevention & Treatment

In order to prevent blisters, you should be sure to wear comfortable shoes with socks that cushion your feet and absorb sweat. Breaking a blister open may increase your chances of developing an infection. However, if your blister breaks, you should wash the area with soap and water immediately and then apply a bandage to the affected area. If your blisters cause severe pain it is important that you call your podiatrist right away.
